Gmail was launched on 01-Apr-2004 and it allowed signup only by invitation. Then there was sign up for account from mobile phone. Then gmail became free for sign up in some countries. Now it is fully open for free sign up without any restrictions.
From google help, Can I sign up without the invitation code? Or without a mobile phone?
